VIN numbers and years

How do I determine the years of my bikes, I don't have titles on some of them, I do have a bill of sale. I've asked my DMV about the VIN #s and they had no records of any of them being titled. They said I can file for a new title, and I'm thinking I might just do that on a couple to see how it goes, if it's easy enough I might get all of them.... in time, they cost a bunch. Anyway they said I need a year.....

The first number in the string of numbers after CA95-(example) 5xxxxx =1965
will tell you the year. Same with the engine number CA95E-5xxxxx =1965
