Left crank case cover

Hi everyone.
I've been lurking around here for the last couple months since a 1964 Benly magically appeared in my kitchen.

The day he moved in.

I've started taking him apart and I ran into a problem. The left crank case cover is stuck. I removed all the screws - which was a nightmare - and disconnected the wire to the contact plate. The cover lifts about an inch and then stops. I think the cover is stuck on the shift spindle but I want to see if anyone else has any suggestions because I've never had a cover get stuck on a spindle before.

Any ideas?

Make sure that your clutch cable is disconnected.

The clutch cable was gone when I got it. The engine is now sitting on my kitchen table and I'm still not having any luck getting the cover unstuck.

Ok. For kicks and grins, loosen the 10mm nut above the large slotted screw (the clutch adjustment) and turn out the adjuster.

Then assuming that every screw is out, the clutch adjuster is loose, no clutch cable. Try a rubber mallet to move the case in and away from the engine. The only thing I can think of is gobbs of crap in the shift shaft, sealant on the case cover or a screw yet not removed.

If for some reason the case cover breaks, they are cheap and available. Even I have one that is nice and could not get $5.00 for.

They can stick on the shaft, try to get ease oil inside on the shaft while it is pulled out an inch. Push it back on and give the splined area a good squirt.

Yah, they always stick on the shifter shaft. Just pry it on the bottom right corner off the shaft and it'll come off.

I tried everyone's suggestions and I still haven't gotten the cover off. I used a mallet to knock it back down off the splines. It was completely caked with junk so I cleaned it up with PB Blaster. The splines are pretty chewed but I was able to fix it up with a diamond bit. I'll try again when I get home from work.

Got it!!!

The inside of the case was packed full of gunk. I'm not talking about just grease and road dirt... There were twigs and seeds mixed in with the mud. I wish I knew this bike's life story.

My garage isn't insulated so projects wander in and out of the kitchen all winter.
