Default Sprocket carrier inside chain guard?

My poor little C95 didn't come with a chain guard. I'm doing some cleaning and polishing and noticed the sprocket carrier has a groove on it's hub site edge, does the chain guard go in this groove? If it does it will save me some polishing time. Thanks, Cliff.

Reviewing my pictures, it looks like that groove is inside the wheel hub when it's all assembled. The chain guard doesn't reach quite that far back.

No matter - when the sprocket is mounted to that piece, it's fairly well covered. Only the outer half inch or so tends to be visible. I wouldn't dwell too long on polishing this piece.
