Be aware that chemically cleaning the tank could open rust pits into holes.
Protect the paint with a light coating of grease or Vasoline.

Chemical. Citric acid works best and is the friendliest to work with. Drain the tank and remove it from the bike. Remove the petcock(you will need a new "O" ring.

Wash the tank out, I like Westleys White Wall cleaner..

Fill the tank with Hot water...hotter the better. Add a 1/4 lb of citric acid (granulated, found on eBay) Mix and allow to sit for 6-12 hrs.

Repeat wash, dry..then

Buy a package of BB's. Block all holes after adding the BB's to the tank. Shake the tank violently, back & forth, up and down, right to left, about 10 minutes. Drain out the BB's, rewash and allow to dry. Reassemble.

Or:Phosphoric Acid. Same hot water, 30 minutes. Be carefull. Phos burns.

Or:Caswell makes a tank sealer that some forum members swear by.

Or: Wash the tank out as above. Just do the BB's.
