Fuel problem?

Hello there!

I have a CA160 and she just started to not start!

The battery is fine. She cranks and cranks when I hit the starter switch but wont run.

I just filled up the gas tank for the first time and I did notice that the inside had some rust.

Possible clogged fuel line??

What is the best way to troubleshoot this?

Thanks,

Doug

1st thing...move the fuel selector to reserve. You just might be low on fuel. If not...

Before you try what I suggest, please be prepared to deal with some spilled fuel. Move the bike outside and have paper towels, coffee can and rags at ready.

Ok, with the fuel valve at the closed position, remove the fuel bowl from the petcock body. Check inside for dirt, rust and the like. You will see a screen as well. Look for the same. With a coffee can or container placed under the petcock and turn the selector to "on" and "reserve". You should get flow from both (provided you have enough fuel to flow thru the "on" tube)

If no fuel, your clogged at the tank.

If fuel OK, reassemble and disconnect the fuel line at the carb. with fuel line in the can, move the petcock selector again to reserve and "on"

If no fuel, your line is clogged (unlikely but possible)

If fuel flows thru the line, carefully blow out the fuel inlet with some carb cleaner. There is a very small inlet at the float valve that can clog up with a single piece of rust or dirt.

Alas, if all of the above does not do the trick, you may have to remove the carb bowl and look for dirt/rust.

Let us know if the above works for you.
