Magpie's (Cliff"s) C95 Project

5 Attachment(s)
Hi! I signed in as a newbie some time ago but have finally decided to do something about the little bike I was given and document it here. It was built in November 1964 and brought to Canada by the previous owner, so the story goes. I got it from his daughter just before she left for Australia, come and get it she says the night before she left. I live in Victoria, B.C., she in Kelowna B.C. After a scramble to get a fellow to pick it up for me I dashed up there to pick it up. It's very rough and used as a trail bike. The last plate on it is a 1967 Alberta plate. It's sat for quite awhile as other projects came along but here we go. I've taken the motor out of the frame and started a disassembly to discover it's going to need a new head, pistons and rings. The bores look good and inside the cases looks okay too. The poor thing has been used, abused and put away wet many times. I did get it running which made we verry happy but the engine noises were quite something. The cam chain has been digging a gouge for itself for some time I think. Hopefully, in time, it will look some of the great projects done here.

A few more just for fun. Cliff.
A video of it running is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kox1RxT_iHs&feature=plcp

It just amazes me no end how these Honda Baby Dreams can be so abused, abandoned, etc., and decades later start right up with a little TLC and sound as good as this one. Actually, to me they are a work of art........like art deco....rectangular shocks, flares, chrome galore.................and 50 years old to boot.

Awesome pictorial already, keep it coming!;)

Got a bit of cleaning done today. Lots more to do. Cliff.

Sam Green 07-26-2012 08:11 AM

Cliff needs a CA95 head, pistons and late model cam, can anyone help out.

Sam.:)

Magpie 07-26-2012 09:41 AM

Thanks for that Sam. Could also add sprocket covers A & B, chain guard, handlebars. This poor bike has had a rough life. Cliff.

More puttering. Got the engine cases painted, Duplicolor Engine Enamel 1615, same as I used on my 750's. Nice colour and easy to use. Cliff

More done, motor put together and right side assembled. These are small motors. fasteners are probably too bright or shiny but I like that look. Left side of the motor will have to wait until I find a good head. Cliff.

Cliff, can you post pics of the Canadian outer sprocket cover and also of the clutch mechanism in front of the sprocket.

Hi Sam! I don't have a primary sprocket cover, in or outside. Here's a couple of pics of the cover in front of that. You'll see the guide for the clutch cable goes in the upper rear portion of it and would also be part of the outer sprocket cover. I have seen CA95 covers where the clutch cable guide appears to only go through the sprocket outer cover. Cliff.

Sam Green 07-30-2012 06:19 AM

I know a guy that might have the outer cover over here, he showed it to me a few years back, asked me did I know what it was off, I do now:D
If he still has it I'll get it off him and I cant see the back cover being any different to the UK or American ones, I may have a spare.
The other option if they are hard to come by is fit a complete CA95 side set.

Sam.:)

Magpie 07-30-2012 06:50 AM

Thanks Sam! Cliff.

Magpie 08-17-2012 11:16 AM

Hi Sam! I was just curious if you were able to track down the sprocket covers? Thanks for offer of the pistons and rings but I think I have that covered now. Cheers, Cliff.

Sam Green 08-20-2012 10:29 AM

Hi Cliff, I have got all three of the cases, UK style which are the same as CA ones.
You can have them at a fair price but the postage from the UK is a bit on the high side. See if you can find them Stateside, if not I'll get a price for posting.

Sam.:)

Magpie 08-20-2012 12:14 PM

Thanks for the postage warning! I'll see what I can find here and let you know my next step. Cheers, Cliff.

Sam Green 08-20-2012 01:27 PM

No problem Cliff, the price will be low but I can't do anything about the postage.

Magpie 08-20-2012 03:47 PM

Yes, it can be crazy. I was going to buy some tank trim for a CB750K1 from a fellow there and it turned out the postage was going to be $50 - end of sale. Do you have a guess what it might be Sam? Cliff.

Spokes 08-20-2012 04:41 PM

Is this the part your looking for?

Magpie 08-20-2012 04:50 PM

Sorry, no picture showing. It's the inner and outer sprocket covers. Cliff.

Sorry Cliff, I missed this one, I'll see if I can dig them out tonight but to be honest, you really would be better off finding them in the USA.
I have to go to the post office tomorrow so it's no biggy.

Chip, Cliff needs the generator cover that the points go on and the final drive gearbox cover and mating inner cover where the clutch cable goes through between them.

Sam.:)

Sam Green 08-29-2012 08:19 AM

Cliff, if you can hang on there, that mate I told you about might still have that Canadian type cover and will check if the UK back cover will mate up to it, if so I have a back cover. It'll be less to post and you can retain your cover that the cable goes through. It might be a few days as I'm off racing in Finland this weekend.

Sam:)

Magpie 08-29-2012 09:59 AM

Sounds good Sam! Got some rings from Thailand, strange part number though, 13011-201-003, advertised as standard size but no parts fiches have that number. Must be very old OEM box. Ordered a C95 piston and received a CA95 so I have a good one of each -ha! cliff.

Sam Green 08-30-2012 01:35 AM

Good news Cliff, my mate has the Canadian style gearbox case and I have the back section. He just wants the postage to me.
Both parts will be on the way to you when I receive the part from him, no charge for the parts unless you want to make a donation to my cause:D
Off to Finland soon so it will be next week before you hear from me.

Sam.:)

Magpie 08-30-2012 06:57 AM

You are The Man! Cliff.

Sam Green 09-04-2012 01:47 AM

Hi Cliff, got back yesterday to find your Canadian gearbox cover stuffed in my letterbox.:D
It's nice and clean and cost my mate £2.20 to ship too me.
You have two options on postage to Canada, £9.20 take your chance or £14.35 signed for.
Which ever you choose, add the £2.20 to it and PayPal it to me.
Let me know which you want and let me have your postal address.
The back cover is also in the box, I'll go give it a clean now as the front cover is making it look tatty.:D:D

Sam.:)

Magpie 09-04-2012 09:24 PM

Hi Sam! Lets go the better way for a total of 16.55 pounds. I'm assuming it's British pounds. How about we round it up to 25 pounds which I get to be just over $39.00 CAN and a (very) modest donation to you cause. My office would probably be best so it can be signed for:
Cliff Halayko
4440 Chatterton Way
Victoria, BC
Canada V8X 5J2

Your payPal address is what?

Cheers,
Cliff.

Sam Green 09-05-2012 12:13 AM

No problem Cliff, it's on its way, I already had your address from the Brian Bear fund raiser.
I'll PM my PayPal address to you as it has changed since you donated.

A long time between posts, the building budget is a bit thin right now, but the tear down is not expensive, so it's time to get going again. And, a new piston is on it's way so I can button up the motor. The covers from Sam are cleaned up and painted too. Thanks, Sam! The more I get into the more I get a bit discouraged but it also means the more things I have to learn how to do which is a good thing.
Cliff.

Magpie 11-09-2012 02:15 PM

I lied, he doesn't have the right piston and refunded my payment. Dammit! Cliff.

Magpie 12-02-2012 07:01 PM

I haven't posted for awhile so here's a brief update: Bike stripped to a bare frame, got a piston so the motor's back together, started tp clean and sand body parts (forks, headlight housing, swing arm) and started polishing some of the shiny bits. Cliff.

I haven't posted for a VERY long time on this build. Between getting busy in other directions and getting discouraged so things have slowed to a slug's pace. However, in answer to a parts/bike wanted ad I run regularly a "parts' bike appeared. $200 and it's mine with papers. The engine came in a box, all apart and needing some extra parts which several members here have helped with. Wheels came too. And, it's better than the one I'm working on. So, the parts bike will go to the front of the line and the red one will have to wait patiently for awhile. It may have to wait until the CM90 gets done.
Here it is in all it's glory.

http://i468.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps7dfcf34f.jpg

The engine has been taken apart and cleaned, new cylinders obtained, new exhaust valve, piston on it's way (thanks Spokes) and the work continues.

http://i468.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps5ea5d830.jpg

So, onward and upward. 2 Benly's -ha!

Cliff.

Cliff, there's definitely a story in that wrinkled back fender. Somebody scuffed an elbow a few decades ago.

Magpie 02-19-2015 08:50 AM

Fun in the garage. Too many projects on the go.

Is this too shiny? I know it's not correct but....................

frappy 02-21-2015 12:03 AM

Not too shiny in my book. Plus, it gets partially covered by alot of other parts and it'll dull with age to a nice patina anyway.;)

Magpie 03-14-2016 10:56 PM

Long time between posts but I have started again. Time for paint prep.
